Award Winner - South Huntington School District

eBoard Award Congratulations to the South Huntington School District from Huntington, New York, for being selected to receive the eBoards of Excellence Award for their creative and innovative use of eBoard!

"eBoard brings excitement and vigor to the communication process in the South Huntington School District. It is used extensively as a 24/7 conduit of information between teachers, students, parents and administrators. Showcasing student projects, listing assignments and posting learning materials on eBoard provides an opportunity to share a student’s day with their family. We are presently expanding our use of eBoard to explore new horizons such as posting podcasts of students reading their original stories and poetry, teachers recording spelling words in English and in Spanish for our Dual Language classes, and posting sound clips of musical rehearsals to enhance home learning opportunities."

My eBoard provides my students with an educational opportunity that is interactive and fun and engages all of my students whether they are in class, or they are at home. It does not matter what level my students are at because there is always a link or activity for everyone. According to one of my students, “The best part of eBoard is that there are educational games and lots of different facts.” My eBoard is also used as an instructional tool for my colleagues to gather ideas and sites that they would like to use. Finally, it is a powerful communication tool between school and home to allow my parents to view daily homework, see class events, have fun with question of the day, view happening hundreds, and take a peek at some projects we are doing in class.

I teach Pre Calculus and College Calculus. My eBoard makes a difficult subject a bit more user friendly with welcoming and informative postings. My eBoard is used as a daily tool where students can see assignments, deadlines, extra help availability and locate study skill resources. Students cannot use the excuse that they didn’t know the homework assignment or when a test will be administered in my classroom.

The eBoard I have created is like an online companion to my 7th an 8th grade social studies classes. It has links to a short bio of me and my interests outside of work that was created to give the students and their parents an idea of who I am and what to expect in the coming year. My eBoard also contains many of the handouts that were used in both the current unit and in previous units, cutting down on missing assignments due to absenteeism.

I use my eBoard to provide opportunities for students to practice their band music, scales, and NYSSMA solos. There are links to an online metronome, weekly music journal topics, and instrumental fingering charts.

Doug Moore, High School World Language Teacher

My eBoard has something for everyone including links to club events, Spanish music videos, homework assignments, grading criteria, and a monthly technology newsletter for my fellow colleagues.

I enjoy maintaining and updating my classroom e-board because I believe that it shares with parents their children’s creativity and the fun that students have as they learn new things during their school day. Parents can find information on the latest class field trips, pictures of classroom projects and even information on various units being studied in class. Children who are absent can find their spelling words and homework assignments so that they don’t fall behind in their schoolwork due to illness. I also maintain a useful set of educational websites for students and parents to access from home.

My eBoard has proved to be a valuable tool for my students. I use it to post documents with information that students gathered during science labs for follow up activities in the computer lab, class notes (PowerPoint) before exams, links to study guides from our textbook publisher and past tests and quizzes. We have links to lots of current event sites and research sites to help with our Science project. I include in my eBoard links to free Microsoft and Adobe downloads so that students can view at home the various types of documents that I post. In addition, there are lots of links to games and other topics of interests such as space programs and the Hubble telescope.
